Goal Smasher

Katja didn’t spend yesterday progressing… She spent it leaping past her goals 😳

Within 2hrs of her mask being reduced to nasal cannula, Katja got up. OT came in to see how she was doing and she decided she’d had enough laying flat watching Moana 2.

She made the 6 steps over to a chair after changing into some comfy PJs. Child life brought her Barbies, coloring stuff and some Legos. She stayed up in that chair for the next 2.5hrs before falling asleep in it 😆 She really didn’t want to get back into bed.

PT stopped by right around lunch time and we we able to get her to walk and use the bathroom. Katja decided she rather go through the journey to the potty than keep her cath in, so she’s been getting up and moving regularly since.

We had lots of rumbles of surprise down the hallway, plenty of Dr heads peaking in with surprise but I warned them. I tell everyone, every single time…. She’s a fast healer, when she is determined nothing will stop her and she is determined to leave 😆

Before we’d even hit the 24hr mark there were discussions of sending her to the step down unit. We hadn’t seen Neurology yet and I decided it best to decline until tomorrow.

In less than 24hrs Katja was up walking, eating (and I mean EATING! She ate an entire grilled cheese for lunch with half the tomato soup and a whole s’mores brownie!) and blowing through goals. Later that evening she refused to keep her nasal cannula on and has been on room air since.

Last night was pretty uneventful. She slept as well as possible (as did we). This morning at 6am her nurse came in to inform us that she’d be heading to step down today. Almost all of her IVs were removed (all the important ones but one 😉) and her internal BP monitoring. Her pace wires and chest dressing will be removed today. Her drain tubes will probably stay until tomorrow as she still has a bit of fluid in her chest. PT/OT plan to do some hallway walking today as well.

She’s doing fantastic. Today will be a big day for her. With walking, heading to step down and getting her additional immunosuppressant meds added to her regimen it’s going to be drama fill that’s for sure 😆
